The Coronavirus pandemic has introduced a new normal to American society. Things we normally take for granted, like grocery shopping, dining out, bicycle riding, strolling in the park, have become difficult and in some cases forbidden. Social distancing, face masks, gloves and hand washing are the few things we can do to help us feel like we have some control in an otherwise helpless situation.

During the American Civil war, the idea of hand washing wasn’t even given a thought; bacteriology wasn’t a well-known theory at that time and soldiers on both sides saw more than their fair share of infectious diseases. Poor hygiene, nutritional deficiencies and untreated battle wounds contributed to diseases such as pneumonia, typhoid, dysentery, malaria and small pox. The Civil War saw approximately 660,000 soldier deaths, and for every soldier that died of a battle wound, two died of disease or infection.
